Nabeel Rajab-Shia Activist in Jail for Demanding His Rights

Nabeel_RajabSRW demands the immediate release of the Shia human rights activist Nabeel Rajab. We  demand the overturning of his conviction for organizing demonstration.

Nabeel Rajab is a Shia Bahraini and the president of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights. He was sentenced on August 16, 2012 to three years in prison for organizing and participating in demonstrations between January and March of this year. Rajab was serving three month prison term for his June 2 tweet calling for the Bahraini prime minster to resign.

SRW believes Nabeel Rajab was practicing his right to peaceful gathering by participating in demonstrations. His conviction is a violation of his right to freedom of assembly.

Nabeel Rajab, just like any other Shia Muslim, must enjoy his human rights, and should be released immediately, SRW says.

Shia in Bahrain facing all kind of discrimination, inhumane treatment and unlawful arrest. It is the government duty to respect people rights and give them the freedom to speak out and demand their rights.
