July First was a Bloody Start for Pakistani Shia Muslims

CaptureTwo explosions in Quetta claimed the lives of 28 Shia Muslims and injured 70 more on July 1st, 2013. The explosions took place close to the very well-known Abu Talib Islamic Center. The suicide was a bicycle rider who exploded his bombs when he got close to the center. Lashkar-e-Jhangi proudly claimed the responsibility of the explosion.

10 women and 4 children were among the victims of this violent act against Shia Muslims in Pakistan.

Shia of Pakistan have lost thousands of lives because of their faith. Lashkar-e-Jhangi is one of many terrorist groups that target Shia population yet Pakistani government has not managed to stop them. SRW asks the Pakistani government to immediately take action and clean the country from terrorist groups.

Islamic State vs Sunni State

Once it was believed that countries claiming to follow Islamic Law (Sharia) are Islamic states. Recent anti- Shia movements proved those countries are not Islamic states, they are Sunni states. Throughout the history Shia been known Islamic sect. They believe in same God as all Muslims do, follow the same prophet, and practice all aspects of the religion according to the Quran (Islamic holy book). However, a new growing trend that tries to call Shia infidel is being supported by many so called “Islamic” countries.

What is the difference between Islamic state and Sunni state?

In an Islamic state, all sects of Islamic are considered Muslim, also non- Muslims have freedom to practice their religion according to Quran and the tradition of the Prophet Muhammad. However, in Sunni state, any non- Sunni is illegal and will face legal charges. This means Muslims who have different faith than Sunni are not welcome in those states. This is exactly what is going on in many countries of the Middle East. All minorities, whether Muslims or not, are rejected by governments and citizens in those countries because these countries are not Islamic states they are Sunni states.

The ideology of intolerance toward non-Sunni is strongly supported and spread by Slafis and Wahhabis who are in fact behind most terrorist activities around the world.

SRW believes shifting from Islamic state to Sunni state increases discriminations and human rights violations. SRW invites all shifting countries to stay Islamic and not acquiesce to Salfis and Wahhabis terrorist ideologies.

Sha’ban, Another Opportunity to Kill Shia Muslims

carbomb1#Sha’ban is a month with many Shia ritual ceremonies and therefore it is another opportunity for anti-Shia terrorists to attack and kill Shia Muslims.

Yesterday series of bomb explosions claimed lives of many Shia Muslim in Baghdad. The bombs were to attack Shia pilgrims who visited Iraq on the 15th of Sha’ban for spiritual ceremonies. About 42 people were killed and dozens were injured due to the explosions.

Iraq is a visiting site for many Shia Muslims throughout the year because of its importance. There were bob explosions almost in every special occasion that Shia visit this country. Anti-Shia groups have attacked Shia communities for centuries. On average 23 Shia are killed every day since April 2013 in Iraq. Although bombings mostly target Shia, they have not stopped them visiting this country in especial occasion.

SRW highlights that Shia Muslims live in hormone with people of other religions therefore political conflicts should not result in killing peaceful innocent citizens. SRW invites all to stop violent and demand freedom through peaceful strategies.

Morsi’s Report Card

On June 30th 2012 Mohammad Morsi, a representative of Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) and Muslim Brotherhood(MB) took over the office as president of Egypt. When people of Egypt protested two years ago they demanded freedom from oppressors such as Mubarak. They dreamed for an Egypt that runs based on democracy and freedom. People, regardless of their religion, political view and ethnicity, hand in hand, changed their government for better.

Now one year later, Egypt is a country in which people feel free to attack, kill and burn houses of their own people thanks for Morsi’s leadership. Since Morsi took office in 2011, Shia rights violators have gotten a green light to degrade, humiliate, harass, attack and kill minorities in this country. Human right violators repeatedly encouraged public to hate Shia Muslims and refuse to live with them in harmony. They even addressed president Morsi and directly asked him to refuse Shia as Muslims, and Morsi welcomed their comments. If not as a president of a nation, as a representative of FJP Morsi should have stood beside minorities and protected their rights, but instead he supported the extremists and gave them opportunity to spread hatred messages through public media and in mosques.

Extremists openly go to villages and cities with Shia Muslim population and urge the non-Shia Muslims to refuse to live with Shia. They distribute posters and flyers with hate messages on them in small communities and spread hate between Shia and Sunni neighbors. A clear example is the mob attack that took place on Sunday the 23rd where 4 Shia including a very well-known cleric were killed. They were attacked by civilians, beaten up and their dead body was dragged to street as a sign of victory.

As eye witnesses reported about 3000 people, random citizen, gathered in the small village at the same time with stick and they all targeted the house of the known Shia citizen. Gathering up such a crowd needed lots of time and planning; It took hours for all those people to march to the house, attack them, and drag their bodies and yet security forces did not have time or power to interfere and stop the crowd?

The uselessness if the forces against 3000 people prove their lack of skills and motivation to secure a country with about 82.54 million people.

One year anniversary report card of Morsi is full of violations and oppression. How can he run a country when he himself is a human right violator? Morsi is the first president in Middle East who openly degraded minorities in public. Even Saudi Arabi’s kings, who are funding most human rights violations toward Shia Muslims, did not do that in media.

Looking back in Egypt’s history during the first year of Morsi’s presidency, the people’s goals were digressed from freedom and democracy to hatred and sectarian violent.

Clearly after one year, Morsi showed that he is not capable to implement democracy and freedom in Egypt. Now his record is full of crimes that he must be plead guilty in Egyptian courts.

Egyptian President Must be Held Responsible for Murder and Mob Attack

egyptsShia Rights Watch strongly condemns the mob attack to Shia Muslims populated village and assassination of Sheikh Hassan Shehata and three other Shia Muslims last Sunday. Sources reveal that crimes against Shia are supported by Egyptian president since he promotes hate speeches by clerics in public.

On Sunday a mob of 3000 people attacked houses of Shia Muslims in the small village of Zawya Abu Muslim in Giza, killing four people. The attack was motivated by lectures of anti-Shia clerics who called Shia infidels in the village.

Albawaba news quoted an eyewitness Barakat, who reported the incident live on Twitter. He took photos and videos showing one of the Shias began dragged in the street after being beaten. “I saw several Shias stabbed several times while they were being dragged in some sort of public lynching,” said Barakat.

Other eyewitnesses stated that police forces arrived late at the scene and only watched the crowd with not effort to stop them.

SRW emphasizes that the growing campaigns against Shia Muslims under the supervision of president Musri is leading to sectarian conflicts and is against human rights.

SRW had previously warned the Egyptian authorities about violations towards Shia Muslims in Egypt. Shia rights violation escalated especially after president Mursi took office in 2012. President Mursi has supported hatred languages and activities against Shia minority and his support lead to harassment, human rights violations, oppression and now assassination of Sheikh Hassan Shehata and three more.

Because of the increasing violation towards Shia Muslims, SRW calls on Egyptian Judicial Council to trial the Egyptian president in charge of inciting sectarian conflict in country. Mursi must be held responsible for the crimes against Shia Muslims since there are many evidences available that his leadership is leading to crimes against human rights.

SRW believes president Mursi should be questioned by the Egyptian court for violating human rights and increasing violence between sects of Islam.

Shia School Targeted in Pakistan

schoolIn Islamabad, Pakistan, 14 people were killed and 28 injured in a Shia Muslim religious school, Friday, June 21st. 2 militant attackers and 1 suicide bomber entered the school with the intention of detonating in the inside of the school but was not able to make it the far into the building. There was an exchange of gunfire within the school with the police guard who was able to injure the suicide bomber. Unfortunately, the bomber was able to make his way into the building and detonate the explosives.

Shia Rights Watch demands immediate action to protect children in Pakistan. Children have right to security and safety. Also schools must be well protected so children practice their right to education in a safe place. SRW condemns targeting school and asks all parties to stop act of violent toward citizens.

Continues Bombing in Pakistan

pakistan.jpgA duel bombing attack in Quetta, Pakistan killed 115 people and wounded 120 in a popular billiards hall in the Shia Muslim populated area. The attack started when a suicide bomber went into the hall, killing 81 people with the initial attack. Then, 5 minutes after the attack, a car bomb detonated outside of the building previously targeted. Among those who were killed were members of the Pakistan police enforcement, rescue workers tending to the wounded from the first explosion, and journalists. The attack severely damaged the surrounding infrastructure, including the three-story building the housed the billiards hall, nearby shops, homes, and offices. Lashkar-e-Jhangyi, a Sunni Muslim militant group, claimed responsibility for the attack.

Shia Rights Watch condemns the attacks and urges the government to take immediate action to stop violence towards Shia population in Pakistan.

“Thank You” Letter to NY Times

“Thank You” Letter to NY Times

Shia Rights Watch would like to thank The New York Times for their article published by Yasir Ghazi on June 18th concerning a suicide bombing in Baghdad. As human rights violations against Shia Muslims are increasing worldwide, especially in the Middle East, it is critical that news agencies report ethically on the issues, investigate the roots of the problems, and share this information with the public.

The bombing at the Shia mosque in Baghdad is yet another example of the growing sectarian violence that threatens the lives of innocent Shia Muslims. These types of attacks have been on the rise in recent months and Iraq is now facing its deadliest period since 2008, when sectarian violence was at its peak. The targeted killings of Shia Muslims in Iraq must be stopped.

As such, Shia Rights Watch appreciates The New York Times’ commitment to spreading awareness of this issue. The agency’s decision to cover such news is proof of its ethical practice and adds to the credibility of the publication.
