Speech Against Oppression Results in Bloody Saudi Beat Down

shiarightswatch.com_al-Atar.10.31.2011A renowned Canadian Shia imam who travelled to Saudi Arabia to perform the annual Muslim Hajj pilgrimage has been arrested in Medina after being beaten, witnesses say. The Canadian government confirmed the arrest on Sunday and a spokesman with the foreign affairs department said its embassy in Riyadh was prepared to provide diplomatic assistance. A Shia Rights Watch represenetive was in Madina on that time and met with lawyers in order to give support to Al-Atar.

The Canadian foreign office gave no further information, citing privacy concerns.According to news reports, Usama al-Atar was with an international group that travelled to Saudi Arabia for Hajj and was leading a prayer recitation at a cemetery on Sunday when witnesses said he was confronted by officers from the country’s religious police. CTV reported that officers beat him without provocation, chasing and suffocating him in front of more than 200 witnesses.

The officers then reportedly took him into custody without explanation. Michael Hayward, a British citizen, described the assault to CTV: “He was bleeding quite a lot from the beating. They put his head to an air conditioning unit and sat on him until he was blue in the face.” Hayward told the Toronto Star that police “virtually strangled” al-Atar even though the imam did not put up a fight.

After Saudi police released al-Atar, Shia rights watch represenetive met him in Mecca and spoke about his situation in Madina and Mecca.

Wahhabi Terrorists Martyred 22 Shia Pilgrims in Western Iraq

Iraq1-1Wahhabi Gunmen killed 22 Shia pilgrims in an ambush in Iraq‘s western province of Anbar on Monday, a police official says.

They were travelling from Karbala, amongst the holiest of Shia cities, on a trip north to another holy shrine in neighbouring Syria. The bodies were discovered late on Monday night, hours after the gang of gunmen stopped the bus at a fake security checkpoint and told all the women to get off, according to one official who interviewed a survivor.

The gunmen drove the bus a few miles off the main highway in the Sunni-dominated Anbar province. The pilgrims were ordered off the bus and shot one by one. “There was a big bus and a mini bus containing 30 people, including 22 men and eight women,” Major General Hadi Razij, head of Anbar police, told Reuters. “They took the men and they left the women. They killed the 22 men.”

Security officials and a political leader from Karbala confirmed the shooting details. All spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorised to release information.

The sprawling desert province of Anbar was the heartland of a Wahhabi insurgency after the invasion, and its main cities, Ramadi and Falluja, saw some of the fiercest fighting of the war.

In April 2007, some 110 people were killed and hundreds injured in bombing attacks on holy sites in Karbala, considered the second most important city for Shia Muslims.

14 Shia Killed and Dozens Wounded in Basra,Iraq

BASRA, Iraq — A car bomb blew up near a Shi’ite mosque in the southern oil hub of Basra Thursday, killing four people and wounding dozens, security officials said, as a wave of blasts killed at least 14 across Iraq.

The bomber targeted people as they emerged from the Dawood al-Ashoor mosque in southern Basra’s Abu Khasib district, according to Ali Ghanim al-Maliki, head of the Basra Provincial Council security committee, who put the toll at four dead and 34 wounded.

Maliki said the car bomb was parked nearby but other security sources said it was detonated by a suicide bomber.

A hospital source said the blast in Basra, 420 km (260 miles) south of Baghdad , killed three and wounded 50.

“The explosion happened in a garage which was near this mosque and parts of the car that exploded fell into my house,” said Laith Hial, a resident near the Basra blast site.

The explosion set fire to nearby cars and shops, a police officer at the scene said.

More than eight years after the U.S.-led invasion that ousted Saddam Hussein, Iraq is plagued by Sunni Islamist insurgents and Shi’ite militias that launch bombings and other attacks daily.

A series of car bombs and suicide blasts across Iraq wounded scores of people in addition to the 14 deaths. Several of the bombings hit security forces.

Insurgents often target the police and army in a bid to destabilize the Iraqi government as it tries to decide whether it wants U.S. troops to stay past a year-end deadline for their departure.

In the city of Falluja, 50 km (32 miles) west of the Iraqi capital, a car driven by a suicide bomber exploded at a police checkpoint, killing four police officers and wounding five others, a local police source said.

In another Falluja attack, three Iraqi soldiers were wounded when a roadside bomb blew up near their patrol, a police source said.

In the town of Garma, 30 km (20 miles) northwest of Baghdad, three policemen died and five were wounded in two explosions — the first when a suicide bomber detonated his explosive vest and the second when a car bomb blew up, police said.

In northeastern Baghdad, a parked car bomb exploded near an Iraqi army patrol, killing one person and wounding 14 others, including 10 soldiers, an Interior Ministry source said.

Another person died in a sticky bomb attack in Baghdad and a soldier was killed by a roadside bomb in Mosul.

Explosion During Shia Pilgrimage in Karbala Kills three

IraqSeveral bombs have gone off in Iraqi cities, including Baghdad, killing at least five people and wounding manyl.

A parked car bomb targeting a cafe killed two people and wounded nine others in central Baghdad on Saturday, police and hospital sources quoted by the Reuters news agency said.

A sticky bomb attached to a policeman’s car went off near a checkpoint killing at least three people and wounding 15 others, mainly policemen, in eastern Kerbala, 80km south west of Baghdad, police and provincial council officials said.

Sources at the Karbala general hospital who spoke to Al Jazeera confirmed one death.

An annual pilgrimage has been going on Kerbala.
In other bombing news, armed men in a speeding car using weapons equipped with silencers shot at a police checkpoint and wounded three people, including two policemen, in Baghdad’s southeastern Zaafaraniya district, an interior ministry source said.

Al Jazeera’s Rawya Rageh, reporting from Baghdad,  said the attack in the capital was aimed at the general public without specific targets.

Saturday’s blast in Karbala was the third attack in the past two days on the holy city, as Shia pilgrims headed to visit the Imam al-Hussein shrine there to commemorate the birth of Imam Mohammed al-Mahdi.

The anniversary has become one of the annual pilgrimages that show strength for Iraq‘s majority Shia since the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003.

Saddam Hussein banned Shia religious rites during his rule. Since his down fall, Sunni Islamists have frequently targeted Shias.

Unlike in previous years, the Shia pilgrimages in recent months have largely gone by without incident. But this year’s pilgrimage in Karbala has been the target of repeated attacks.

On Friday, a car bomb exploded in a garage near a hospital west of Karbala, killing four people and wounding 20, police said.

Separately, a bomb placed under a parked car killed two people and wounded four others in northern Karbala on Friday, according to an army commander. A hospital source said the blast killed three people and wounded 23 others.

Last year, car bombs killed and wounded scores of people during the Imam Mahdi observance.
