14 Shia Muslim killed based on their ID and Names in Iraq

More ambushes and sectarian killing sin Iraq is creating fear among Iraqi civilians and visitor. On June 6, 2013 a group of travelers were kidnapped at a fake check point in Nukhaib area, west of Iraq. The gunmen shot and killed fourteen Shia Muslims on spot. The authorities believe it was a targeted killing since the IDs were checked and Shia Muslims were killed selectively.

Although there is no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, it is believed to be motivated by the al-Qardawi’s fatwa of jihad.

Sectarian violence and targeted killings have resulted in hundreds of death in April and May 2013. SRW have repeatedly contacted the authorities to improve the security of the visitors and residents of Iraq since this country hosts millions of Shia Muslims every year for religious spirituals. This organization also urged oppositions to stop violence and human rights violations.

SRW condemns the Shia killings in Iraq and asks all human rights organizations and activist to take immediate actions to stop violence in newly stables Iraq.

Embassy of the State of Qatar

Embassy of the State of Qatar

The Honorable Mohamed Bin Abdulla Al-Rumaihi

Embassy of the State of Qatar

2555 M Street, NW,

Washington DC 20037

Dear Mohamed Bin Abdulla Al-Rumaihi

At Shia Rights Watch (SRW), we, researchers, activists, and human rights defenders, who are following human rights violations around the world, believe it is essential for the Qatari government to take action regarding the Shia rights violations that are being advocated in this country.

This letter hopes to resolve issues involving the security and well-being of millions of Shia Muslims, as well as the stability of all nations.

We wish to draw your attention to the hateful messages that are being spread by clerics such as Al-Qaradawi in Qatar.

Al-Qaradawi has repeatedly called Shia Muslims “worse infidels than Christians or Jews.” In his lecture last week he called Sunnis to “Jihad” in Syria. It is important to note that such lectures only add to the unrest in the area, spread violence and also inflame, if not create, sectarian conflicts.

Al-Qaradawi is a resident of Qatar and he is using his freedom in this country to increase sectarian violence in different parts of the Middle East. He is responsible for many war crimes and sectarian conflicts and the Qatari government is supporting him and his mission by not stopping him.

SRW urges the Qatari government to stop Al-Qaradawi and hold him responsible for his hateful messages toward Shia Muslims.

There is no doubt that this government has the capability and desire to prevent and stop human rights violations in the area.

We cannot stress enough how stopping hate lectures can save lives of thousands of suppressed people in Syria and other countries.

Shia rights violation By Yousef Al-Qaradawi

Shia Rights Watch would like to thank The Telegraph news agency for their article on June 2nd, 2013 covering the Shia rights violation by the Muslim Brotherhood’s cleric. As the article explains, Yusef al-Qaradawi, one of the well-known Egyptian clerics based in Qatar, called for “Jihad” in Syria in his Friday lecture. He also degraded Shia Muslims by calling them infidels and said “there is no common ground between the two sides,” referring to Shia and Sunni Muslims. He justified his accusation by saying: “the Iranians, especially conservatives, want to eat the Sunni people.”

There are number of problems with this act of al-Qaradawi. SRW believes:

  • Clearly al-Qaradawi is adding to the unrest in the area by turning the unrest into a sectarian conflict,
  • Beside Syria, al-Qaradawi is spreading hatred among all sects of Islam in many different countries,
  • Al-Qaradawi is associating Shia Muslims with Iran. Shia Muslims hold a variety of nationalities and they have no political bonds with Iran.
  • If al-Qaradawi has opposition to Iran and Hezbollah he should use their names, not their faith, when addressing them. Shia faith is shared between millions of Muslims who are not Iranians or members of Hezbollah.

No opposition group should promote the killing of Shia Muslims and any other minority in Syria because they THINK, or ASSUME all Shia are dependent on Iran’s government and its political policies.

Because of al-Qaradawi and others like him, many civilian Shia have been killed in Syria during past two years. Shia Muslims in Egypt are under attack, Bahrain’s Shia cannot enjoy their basic human rights, and more than 500 Shia were killed in Iraq in May alone, and in Pakistan Shia Muslims are murdered in targeted killings every day.

SRW believes al-Qaradawi and others who share his ideology must look for wise solutions instead of inflaming the conflict by calling for “jihad” and more attacks on civilians. No true leader would call for more killings as revenge and no good leader associates a faith to a political party.

SRW believes al-Qaradawi and his colleagues are responsible for many of the war crimes that are taking place in Syria and ask international human rights committees to take legal actions to stop him from increasing crimes in Middle East.

Note: SRW wrote a thank you letter to The Telegraph and thanked the news agency for its coverage of Shia rights violations.

Pakistan; Untold Stories

The anti-Shia groups have repeatedly carried our discriminatory attacks to Shia communities, individuals, and professionals. The attacks are serious violations to the international and Pakistan’s domestic laws. The Pakistani government has not investigated the violations and people responsible for the attacks have never been punished.

The 28-page report” Pakistan; Untold Stories,” is based on interviews, site visits, NGO and government reports. The report highlights the violations to Shia Muslim minority of the Pakistan and lack of government’s desire and intention to protect them.

” Pakistan; Untold Stories,” includes names and narratives of number of Shia Muslims victims. SRW found that the right to life, education, security and religion freedom were violated in Pakistan and the government has taken no action to protect the Pakistani Shia Muslim minority.

In the report, SRW included recommendations that can help the Pakistani government to end the violations in this country.

A Respond to a Faulty Assumption

This is a response to an article published on TheNational.ae called “The rise of Shia jihadism in Syria will fuel sectarian fires” by Hassan Hassan on June 4th, 2013.

The article represents Hizbollah as a Shia militant group, however readers and writers of the agency should be aware that Hezbollah is not representative of the Shia Muslim faith. It is a political interest group and their entrance into Syria does not mean Shia jihad.

Shia Rights Watch, the Washington DC based human rights organization, believes Shia Muslims have to protect their historical and holy sites just as any other population would when under attack. Syria has many historical sites that represent Shia Muslim history and many of them have been under attack since the Syrian uprising. Most Shia protecting the sites are local and have no political affiliation. Associating Shia Muslims with Iran is one of the biggest mistakes that politicians and media outlets do. Almost 20% of all Muslims around the world are Shia Muslims and they have always been peaceful.

We urge the media outlets and journalist to distinguish Shia Muslim from the Iranian government and to protect their human rights, which are under targeted attack in many countries of the world.

SRW asks all sides not to violate Shia rights based on the faulty assumption that Shia Muslims are dependent on Iranian political interests.

By the way, this article was published on June 4, 2013 and on the web is it dated as JUN 5, 2013!!!

Attack on Syrian Shrines

Fighters in Syria attacked the Shrine of Seyedeh Zeinab yesterday, Wednesday, May 29th, according to sources in Syria. A conflict happened between attackers and civilians who protect the shrine. Although no death was reported, such attacks threaten the security of the area and frighten the civilians.

The Shrine of Seyedeh Zeinab located in Zeibanieh area, close to Damascus is one of the most important Shia holy places in this country. The shrine used to have hundreds of visitors daily and now only local civilians who protect the shrine visit it. Anti-Shia terrorists have been attacking the shrines in Syria.

Also, on May 30th a holy site belonging to Prophet Ibrahim was destroyed by terrorist groups in Syria. As witnesses report a historical building known to belong to Prophet Ibrahim was demolished today.

SRW has been concerned with the destruction. of the historical sites such as shrines and holy places. The terrorist groups are hurting the world’s heritage by demolishing the important historical sites. This trend must be stopped immediately before pieces of human heritages are gone forever.

SRW has contacted Syrian Embassy, UN, USCIRF and other humanitarian organizations to demand protection for holy sites.

Also this organization has repeatedly urged the anti-Shia groups to stop degrading Shia Muslims’ holy sites. Shrines are the red line that should not be crossed. SRW believes holy sites are part of the history and they belong to all humans.

War Crimes Continue in Syria

Wednesday, May 29 was another deadly day in Syria. As unrest continues in this country, more civilians and minority groups are being target of human rights violations. As Syrian Human Rights report at least five people died following the explosion of bombs in the AL-Zahra neighborhood of Damascus. The area is known for its Shia Muslim population.

Thousands of Shia Muslims have been killed in Syria since 2011. Many are sieged in small villages with no access to water and food. Most Shrines belonging to Shia faith are regular targets of attacks.

SRW condemns the targeted killings of Shia Muslims and civilians and asks all groups to respect human rights and do not use sectarian conflicts or war crimes as tools to show their oppositions to the political government.

May Death Toll Passed Five Hundred

iraq-#Violence increases in Iraq’s Shia populated areas every day. May 30th was another day when about 80 civilians were killed and many wounded following the chain of bomb blasts in different areas of Iraq. Iraq is experiencing the highest violence rate since 2011. April reported to have 700 deaths and May death toll passed 500.

Most of the today’s bombings targeted Shia areas of Baghdad.

A car bomb exploded in Ur neighborhood eastern Baghdad.

More car bombs were exploded in Saydiyah. Anbar, Azamiyah, Mosul, Shaab, and Karradah, killing tens and wounding many civilians.

Human right activists and organizations are concerned with the recent systematic bombings and killings in Iraq. The government must take serious and immediate actions to investigate the situation and arrest and punish all human rights violators. Az the United Nations envoy to Iraq, Martin Kobler, urged Iraqi leaders to do more to urgently “pull the country out of this mayhem.”

What the World Must Know about Shia Muslims

Recently, 25 well-known Wahbbi figures issued a statement that call upon individuals to attack and create unrest in Shia led countries. The statement came after the regime’s offensive in Qusayr not long ago. Shortly after the statement was issued, series of bomb blasts attacked Shia Muslim communities in Iraq and Syria killing hundreds of civilians.

SRW believes it is inhumane and naïve to punish innocent civilians for political reasons. Oppositions in Syria are believed to be mostly foreigners paid by Wahhabi governments such as Saudi Arabia. They claim fighting for democracy as well as freedom and are in opposition with pro-Assad groups, YET they kill Shia Muslim civilians to show their anger!!!!

SRW suggests to all sides to exclude civilians from political interests; after all, all groups are fighting with political motivations not humanitarian interests.

SRW does not take any political side, but wherever and whenever Shia rights are violated we get involved.

There are some critical points that all groups must know:

One) Well-educated, wise thinking people would not label Shia Muslims to any certain governments. Shia Muslims DO NOT belong to any political or geographical region. There are hundreds of thousands Shia Muslim around the world and they have different nationalities, ethnicities, colors and languages and they are loyal to their countries.

Two) Human rights laws are INALIENABLE and no cleric, group or religion can exclude others from this law.

Three) Smart leaders guide by offering solutions not by promoting hatred and violence, such as Anti-Shia leaders do.
Four) All those who degrade human lives and values should be punished. Now that hatred and violations are happening as we speak, public punishment needs to be put into place immediately, this will send a grave message to the enemy’s of humanity.
In a world where human rights violators feel safe to publicize their hate messages, innocent victims are perpetrators and violators are considered heroes,
or maybe they are heroes!!!!! After all they are fearless !!!!!

It’s up to you, the wise reader, to conclude…
